Vilniaus Duona has opened the most modern bakery in the Baltic States

On May 12 the year 2016, UAB Vilniaus Duona has officially opened the most modern bakery in all of the Baltic States, a step marking the new stage in the company’s activities. President Dalia Grybauskaite attended the ceremonial opening event, congratulating Vilniaus Duona with the occasion, and together with the representatives of company’s management, cutting the symbolic loaf of rye bread, almost 2 meters length.

Two new production lines have been installed in the new bakery, which was opened after the renovation of the old bakery on the V.A. Graičiūnas Street in the capital – wheat flour long loafs and increasingly popular sandwich bread. Operating both production lines at full capacity, bakery’s total productivity would reach up to 80 tons of bread products per day.

According to Gražvydas Jukna, the Commerce Director of Vilniaus Duona, the renewed bakery will double the production capacities and provide possibilities to offer even more of new modern products, ensuring the highest quality.

One of the key innovations in this bakery is the Clean Room. It is a clean chamber with the air cleaned many times by ultra-modern filters, so the air becomes about 10,000 times cleaner than the one we breathe normally. This innovation helps to prevent the microorganisms getting to the bread packaging section, thus ensuring the longer shelf life without adding any preservatives. Staff members can work in this section after completing the required courses and passing qualifying tests.

Other important innovations are modern mixers and a production line robot, reducing the manual labor in the bakery and a new system of wheat flour leavening, providing the baked goods with an additional flavor, moisture and longer shelf life.

According to G. Jukna, the renewed bakery will strengthen positions in bread market not just in Lithuania and the Baltic States, but also worldwide. Due to the renovation, the company will be able to increase the export volumes and offer more products specially designed for consumers abroad.

The total area of the expanded bakery’s buildings is 10 955 sq. meters.  Renovation development investments amounted to EUR 9.3 million. The bakery has 147 employees.

A special occasion celebrated with a canvas painting made of sliced bread

During the event, celebrating the occasion, artists Jolita Vaitkutė, and Emilija Vonžutaitė for the first time presented the specially designed bread art installation, depicting the Vilnius Cathedral and the Bell Tower. For creative artists and their team, it took a total of 1064 slices of Toste bread and 80 hours of work.

Factum Lithuanian Records Agency has declared this work of art as the biggest sandwich bread picture yet created.
